How to Care for Your Abaya and Hijabs: Washing, Ironing and Storage

Good care keeps colours rich, fabric soft and detailing intact. Always check the care label first, then follow these simple tips.

Washing

  • Cold or lukewarm water and a mild detergent protect colour and fabric.
  • Hand wash or use a gentle cycle inside a laundry bag, especially for hijabs and lightweight abayas.
  • Wash dark colours separately for the first few washes.
  • Embroidered and stone work abayas: hand wash gently or dry clean. Turn them inside out and never scrub or wring the decorated areas.
  • Avoid bleach and strong stain removers on printed and coloured pieces.

Drying

  • Gently squeeze out water; don't twist.
  • Dry in the shade. Strong sunlight can fade colours over time.
  • Hang abayas on a wide hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.

Ironing

  • Use a low to medium heat setting for georgette and synthetic fabrics.
  • Iron on the reverse side, or place a thin cotton cloth on top, especially over embroidery and stones.
  • Crinkle hijabs need no ironing: the texture is part of the look.
  • A steamer is a quick, gentle way to refresh abayas between wears.

Storage

  • Hang abayas; fold hijabs loosely or roll them to avoid sharp creases.
  • Keep stone work and embroidered pieces apart from delicate hijabs so stones don't catch the fabric.
  • Store pins and magnets in a small pouch so they don't snag your hijabs.
